The point of the project is to create suitable garden-friendly breeding habitat for hoverflies. Hoverfly lagoons are basically artificial tree-holes - they are small containers filled with organic matter - such as leaf litter, sawdust or cut grass - and water. The larval stage of some hoverfly species depend on these little microbe-rich swimming pools all year round. We are trying to develop the most effective lagoon and we need your help to trial and monitor them in your garden, on your balcony, or any outdoor space. By encouraging hoverflies, we hope to increase the number of insects in gardens that pollinate our wild flowers.
